A dense, healthy South Shore lawn doesn't happen by chance — it happens by calendar. Here's exactly what to do each month so that come September, yours is the greenest on the block. Tailored to the climate of Brossard, Longueuil, and the Richelieu Valley.

Month-by-month steps

Step 1 April — Spring opening

Pick up branches and winter debris. Light first raking (manual dethatching) to aerate the root mat. NO mowing while the soil is saturated. Assess dead zones for targeted overseeding.

Step 2 May — Start-up and first fertilization

First mow at high height (8 cm) when the grass reaches 10-12 cm. Application 1 of moderate nitrogen fertilizer for start-up. Overseed bare areas. First spot treatment of weeds (dandelions in full emergence).

Step 3 June — Peak growth

Weekly mowing at 6.5-7 cm. Never cut more than one-third of the blade height in a single pass. Watch for chinch bugs and other insects. First potassium fertilization (heat resistance).

Step 4 July-August — Drought survival

Stretch mowing to every 10 days during heatwaves. Mow higher (7.5-8 cm) to shade the roots. Deep watering once per week rather than light daily watering. NO fertilization during dry heat waves.

Step 5 September — Aeration and phosphorus fertilization

Mechanical core aeration (once a year, late summer or early fall). Compost top dressing. Fertilization 3: phosphorus for fall rooting. Fall overseeding to densify.

Step 6 October — Seasonal closing

Final shorter mow (5.5 cm) before the frost. Complete leaf pickup (otherwise smothering). Fertilization 4: pre-frost for winter reserves. Final walk-through to photograph the state and plan next year's program.
