How to choose a certified arborist on the South Shore (Brossard, Longueuil, Boucherville)

Choosing an arborist in Brossard, Longueuil, or Boucherville isn't a one-call decision. The wrong work on a mature tree can kill it within five years — or worse, cause an accident. Here are the 7 hard criteria to verify before signing.

Require SIAQ certification (and verify it)

The International Society of Arboriculture — Quebec (SIAQ) certifies climbers in Quebec following ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) standards. Ask for the certification number, verifiable directly on siaq.org. At least ONE SIAQ-certified climber must be on every pruning or removal job.

Verify liability insurance ($5M minimum)

Commercial liability insurance of $5,000,000 CAD is the minimum acceptable on the South Shore. Ask for an up-to-date certificate BEFORE the job. Without that insurance, damage to your roof or your neighbour's is on you alone.

Mandatory CNESST compliance

CNESST (Quebec's standards, equity, health, and safety commission) covers workers in case of accident. An arborist without CNESST registration = you're civilly liable if one of their climbers falls on your property.

Demand a written work plan

For a removal or major pruning, require a plan: species identified, planned anchor points, sections to dismantle, equipment used, debris handling. A pro hands you that in 5 minutes. An amateur improvises.

Municipal permit — who files it?

In Brossard, Longueuil, Boucherville, and most South Shore cities, a permit is required to remove a tree over 10 to 15 cm in diameter. A good arborist handles the application, filing, and follow-up. If they tell you "sort it out with the city yourself," walk away.
